Text description provided by the architects. In a typical site 8.66m x 38m, the challenge was to design a home with an extensive program of needs on only two floors. The client is a couple with two grown children (occasional visitors) and one teenager.
The house proposes through a succession of courtyards and a concrete structure, the view of a promenade with different nuances. Pedestrian and vehicular access is through an esplanade which is continuous and which shares the level with the living-dining room.
The first courtyard appears as a buffer space between the space for cars and the living room. Through a double height concrete pergola, it allows the entry of a screened light. The living-dining room gains space at its ends through double height frames and voids connecting it to the play-room.
The concrete partition that runs through the house (from the sidewalk to the main suite) is responsible for organizing the spaces in plan and section, dividing the lot into a strip of 3.20m containing the smaller rooms on one side and a strip of 5m with the social spaces.
The second courtyard is in charge of coordinating the vertical circulation, the spa (room with sauna, jacuzzi and shower) and the bathroom of the main suite. One side is the party wall clad in stone that gets into the adjacent rooms (bathroom, kitchen, spa and suite bathroom). The concrete pergola reinforces that continuity, entering the spa to give daylight to the space.
The third courtyard with an "L" shape is the main expansion of the house, taking advantage of the exits of the living-dining room, and the barbecue.
